Mindfulness is the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, non-judgmentally to moment by moment experiences. When we pay attention on purpose, we become less prone to habitual patterns of reacting and better able to respond to life stressors with greater ease and clarity.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a mind-body practice developed in the late 1970's by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD at the University of Massachusetts. Rooted in Buddhist traditions, MBSR is a westernized meditation program aimed at helping individuals decrease stress, manage emotional and physical ailments, and enhance coping skills and behaviors. Typically offered as a complement to medical and psychological interventions, mindfulness meditation can yield the following results:

  • decrease in stress, anxiety or worry
  • management of medical conditions (chronic pain, high blood pressure & heart disease)
  • improved focus & attention
  • enhanced interpersonal relationships
  • reduced impulsive and reactive tendencies
  • mood regulation
  • cultivation of empathy & compassion

Dr. Prince offers a range of personalized/customized mindfulness programs for individuals, families, and organizations. Mindfulness classes are tailored to meet the needs and goals of the individual/group and include elements of guided meditation, embodied mindfulness practices, gentle hatha yoga, stress management techniques and home practice.

Mindfulness programs may include the following:

MBSR 8-week program: The 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program as developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn consists of weekly 2 1/2 hour classes, in addition to an all day meditation retreat. Participants receive a MBSR handbook, guided home practices and a mindfulness certificate of completion.

Introduction to MBSR:  This 2-hour mindfulness workshop provides a sample of the core elements of MBSR as participants are guided through basic mindfulness practices such as sitting meditation, walking meditation, and/or gentle hatha yoga.  Mindfulness resources are provided to further the development of a personal meditation practice.
MBSR in the Workplace:  MBSR for the workplace is tailored to needs of the small group or organization. Classes are offered on an hourly basis or as part of a multiple week mindfulness program.  Similar to the 8-week format, participants learn mindful practices and techniques designed to reduce the negative effects of stress, while enhancing focus, productivity, and overall wellness.
